Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday refuted claims made by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and assured that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) guarantees that no slum in Delhi will be demolished and that welfare schemes for the public will continue uninterrupted.
Addressing a public rally in Delhi's RK Puram, the Prime Minister emphasized the BJP’s commitment to ensuring social welfare. He highlighted that for residents of slums in the national capital, the BJP has introduced a scheme providing nutritious meals at just Rs 5.
“A welfare board will be established for auto drivers and domestic workers, offering insurance coverage of up to Rs 10 lakh. The BJP government will also provide assistance for children's school fees. I assure you, despite the falsehoods spread by AAP, not a single slum in Delhi will be demolished, and public welfare schemes will remain intact,” PM Modi stated.
His remarks come in response to AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal’s allegations on January 12 that slums in Delhi would be demolished over the next five years if the BJP were to assume power, leaving residents homeless.
The Prime Minister also underscored his connection with the Purvanchali community, emphasizing their role in electing him as a Member of Parliament and subsequently as the nation’s leader.
“For decades, Congress and those with a 'jungle raj' mentality neglected the people of Bihar. However, today, the NDA government is working diligently for Bihar. The establishment of the Makhana Board is a recognition of Bihar’s Makhana industry. Most Makhana farmers belong to Dalit communities, and when I work for their welfare, Congress mocks these efforts,” PM Modi said.
He reiterated the BJP’s commitment to supporting the Purvanchali community in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar, ensuring their welfare and development.
Discussing the recently announced Union Budget, the Prime Minister asserted that the BJP is the only party that genuinely values the middle class and rewards honest taxpayers.
“Since the budget announcement, the entire middle class has lauded it as the most middle-class-friendly budget in India’s history. Every family in the country is experiencing a wave of happiness. Our government has completely eliminated income tax for earnings up to Rs 12 lakh. Since independence, no government has provided such a significant tax relief to individuals earning Rs 12 lakh annually,” he stated.
Criticizing previous Congress-led governments, Modi compared past taxation policies, highlighting how taxpayers were burdened in previous decades. “During Jawaharlal Nehru’s tenure, a person earning Rs 12 lakh would have had to pay one-fourth of their salary in taxes. Under Indira Gandhi’s rule, Rs 10 lakh of their Rs 12 lakh salary would have gone to the government. Even just 10-12 years ago, during the Congress era, individuals earning Rs 12 lakh paid Rs 2,60,000 in taxes. However, after the BJP’s budget announcement, those earning Rs 12 lakh will not have to pay a single rupee in tax,” he elaborated.
PM Modi also criticized Congress for imposing heavy taxes in the past while, in contrast, the BJP government has been actively working to ease the financial burden on ordinary citizens.
He further highlighted that under the BJP government, medicines at Jan Aushadhi Kendras are already available at an 80% discount. Additionally, following the budget announcement, the cost of more than 30 medicines for cancer and other serious diseases will be significantly reduced.
“Senior citizens in Delhi will benefit greatly from the new budget. Retired government employees will pay lower taxes and receive higher pensions. The BJP government is committed to supporting senior citizens through these initiatives. The Delhi BJP has also announced a pension of Rs 2,500 for senior citizens, along with free medical treatment worth up to Rs 5 lakh per year,” he added.
The Prime Minister also emphasized the increased allocation for sports in the Union Budget, with the sports budget raised to nearly Rs 3,800 crore and Rs 1,000 crore dedicated to the ‘Khelo India’ initiative.
“The people of Delhi will never forget how AAP and Congress deceived them in the name of sports. The stain of the Commonwealth Games scam runs deep, and Congress will never be able to wash it away. AAP’s mismanagement of the proposed Sports University in Delhi is well known to the people and youth of the capital. That is why the youth of India trust and stand with the BJP,” PM Modi concluded.
The Delhi Assembly elections are set to take place in a single phase on February 5, with vote counting scheduled for February 8.
