NEW DELHI: Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw conducted a comprehensive review of the crowd management strategies at eight railway stations in Prayagraj from the war room at Rail Bhavan on Wednesday.
According to an official statement released by the ministry, Vaishnaw directed officials to ensure the availability of trains in all directions to accommodate the significant number of pilgrims.
"The Prayagraj division has been instructed to deploy additional trains as necessary to alleviate passenger congestion while ensuring comfort in the designated holding areas," the statement noted.
Increased Train Operations for Passenger Convenience
As part of the ministry’s efforts to manage the surge in pilgrims, 225 trains were operated by 6 PM on February 12, 2025, facilitating travel for over 12.46 lakh passengers. On the previous day, Tuesday, a total of 343 trains were in operation, carrying more than 14.69 lakh passengers, the ministry confirmed.
To keep passengers informed, Indian Railways has been disseminating real-time updates through multiple channels, including special bulletins, the Mahakumbh area holding zones, railway stations, social media platforms, and other media outlets.
Enhanced Passenger Holding Areas
In response to the increased footfall, four designated holding areas near Prayagraj Junction railway station, each with a capacity of 5,000, have been fully operationalized. Additionally, a newly established holding area at Khusrobagh, with a capacity of 100,000 passengers, was inaugurated on the occasion of Maghi Purnima.
Special arrangements have been made at these facilities to ensure passenger comfort, including provisions for lodging, meals, and other essential services, allowing waiting passengers to stay comfortably until their scheduled departures.
The Indian Railways' proactive measures reflect a concerted effort to enhance passenger experience and ensure seamless travel for pilgrims during this peak period.
