Gohar: In a significant operation, the Forest Department apprehended a smuggler along with a jeep carrying 30 illegally felled timber sleepers during a late-night check post inspection. Acting on the department's complaint, Gohar police have registered a case and taken the accused into custody. Further investigation is underway.
According to officials, a forest team led by the block officer was stationed at a check post late on Sunday night. Around 12:50 AM, a jeep (HP 33-1557) traveling from Baghsayad to Kelodhar was signaled to stop for inspection. However, upon spotting the officials, the driver attempted to flee at high speed. The forest team immediately pursued the vehicle and successfully intercepted it at Kelodhar.
Upon inspection, illegally harvested deodar wood was discovered in the vehicle’s trunk. The driver failed to produce any legal documentation, and the logs bore no official hammer marks. A total of 30 pine sleepers were recovered, with an estimated market value of ₹1,80,166. The accused, identified as Gulshan Kumar, a resident of Tunag, Shikhawari tehsil, Sura Post Office, was taken into custody.
DFO Nachan Surendra Singh Kashyap affirmed that strict action will be taken against those involved in illegal deforestation and timber smuggling. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to protecting forest resources and ensuring stringent enforcement against illegal logging.
