The video caught the attention of Kerala’s Health, Women, and Child Welfare Minister, Veena George, who assured that the government would consider the child’s request while reviewing the anganwadi menu. Sharing the video on her official Facebook page, George acknowledged the suggestion and extended her best wishes to Shanku, his mother, and the anganwadi staff.
"Anganwadis already provide a variety of nutritious meals. Under this government, we have successfully implemented a scheme to distribute eggs and milk. In coordination with the Department of Women and Child Development, local bodies ensure that children receive a balanced diet," George stated.
The child’s request resonated with many, prompting offers from individuals willing to provide him with biryani and chicken fry.
"After the video went viral, several people contacted us, offering to bring biryani and chicken fry for Shanku," his mother shared with a local news channel.
Kerala currently operates approximately 33,000 anganwadis, and in 2022, the state government introduced the Milk and Egg Scheme to enhance child nutrition. Additionally, efforts are underway to transform these centres into smart anganwadis, featuring study rooms, restrooms, kitchens, dining areas, halls, gardens, and play zones. The government has also increased wages for anganwadi teachers, 95% of whom are women.
Shanku’s heartfelt request has sparked meaningful discussions on improving the nutritional offerings in anganwadis, reinforcing the state's commitment to child welfare and education.
