BJP MLA Basangouda Patil Yatnal has been booked for allegedly making derogatory remarks about Kannada actress Ranya Rao, who was recently arrested in connection with a gold smuggling case, according to a PTI report.
The case was registered at the High Grounds police station in Bengaluru based on a complaint filed by Akula Anuradha. Authorities confirmed that Yatnal has been booked under Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to words, gestures, or acts intended to insult the modesty of a woman.
Complaint and Allegations
The complainant alleged that Yatnal’s comments about Rao were “objectionable, vulgar, and disrespectful.” The remarks were reportedly made while the BJP leader was addressing the media in Vijayapura on Monday.
Background of the Gold Smuggling Case
Ranya Rao was arrested on March 3 at the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru after authorities seized 14.2 kg of foreign-origin gold bars, valued at ₹12.56 crore, from her possession. Additionally, investigators recovered gold jewelry worth ₹2.06 crore and cash amounting to ₹2.67 crore from her residence.
Rao is the stepdaughter of senior Karnataka IPS officer DGP K Ramachandra Rao, who was sent on compulsory leave on March 16 following her arrest. Her bail plea is scheduled for hearing on March 19 in a sessions court.
