NEW DELHI — India The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced eight candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh. The candidates are Dharampal Singh, Radhakant Ojha, Prakash Pal, Vidyasagar Sonkar, Gopi Krishna Pandey, Priyanka Singh Rawat, Ram Pratap Singh Chauhan and Shruti Gangwar. The names were approved by the BJP’s Central Election Committee.
Union ministers Hardeep Singh Puri and B.L. Verma have not been included in the list. Former MP Priyanka Singh Rawat and Shruti Gangwar are the two women candidates in the BJP list. The party has also nominated its Uttar Pradesh organisational secretary Dharampal Singh.
Elections are being held for 10 Rajya Sabha seats from Uttar Pradesh, with polling scheduled for October 16. Based on the BJP’s strength in the state Assembly, the party is in a strong position to win eight of the seats. The candidate list also reflects representation from different social and regional groups in the state.
The Samajwadi Party has already announced Ram Gopal Yadav and Dhanraj Nathwani as its candidates and has indicated that it may field another candidate. The deadline for filing nominations for the Rajya Sabha election is October 6.
