CBI Conducts Searches at Former Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel’s Residences Amid Ongoing Investigations

Raipur/Bhilai: Nearly a month after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted raids at the residences of former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday carried out searches at the Congress leader’s properties in Raipur and Bhilai.

According to sources, security has been heightened outside Baghel’s residence, with CRPF personnel deployed to prevent potential law and order disruptions. This comes in response to incidents of stone pelting and crowding witnessed during the ED's previous raids. The latest action by the investigative agency is reportedly linked to multiple alleged scams, including the Mahadev Satta app case, coal scam, liquor scam, and the Public Service Commission (PSC) scam.

Bhupesh Baghel’s Office Responds

Reacting to the searches, Baghel’s office issued a statement on social media platform X, highlighting the timing of the CBI's action. The former Chief Minister was scheduled to travel to Delhi for a meeting of the “Drafting Committee” formed for the AICC session in Ahmedabad on April 8-9. However, before his departure, CBI officials arrived at his Raipur and Bhilai residences.

"Now CBI has come. Former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel was scheduled to travel to Delhi today for the meeting of the ‘Drafting Committee’ for the AICC meeting in Ahmedabad on April 8 and 9. Before he could leave, the CBI reached his Raipur and Bhilai residence," the statement read.

ED Raids Bhupesh Baghel’s Son’s Residence

Earlier on March 10, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted extensive searches at multiple locations, including the residence of Chaitanya Baghel, son of Bhupesh Baghel, in Bhilai. The raids were part of an ongoing money laundering investigation linked to an alleged liquor scam.

The ED has claimed that the Chhattisgarh liquor scam resulted in a substantial financial loss to the state exchequer, amounting to over ₹2,100 crore, benefiting a network of individuals involved in an alleged liquor syndicate.

Following the searches, Congress workers staged protests outside Baghel’s residence, clashing with police personnel and raising slogans against the ED. Reports indicate that ED officials faced resistance, with some officers allegedly being manhandled outside the Congress leader’s residence in Durg.

The ongoing investigations into Bhupesh Baghel and his associates continue to stir political tensions in Chhattisgarh, with opposition leaders calling the raids a targeted attack, while agencies maintain that they are acting within legal frameworks.
