Chandigarh, March 25: The Haryana government, in a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naib Singh Saini on Tuesday, deliberated on several key decisions, including benefits for Congress MLA and wrestler Vinesh Phogat. Despite her disqualification from the Paris Olympics final, the government has decided to extend the promised silver medal rewards to her.
Phogat, who was set to compete in the 50kg category final, was disqualified due to exceeding the weight limit by 100 grams. However, the Haryana government had previously announced that she would be honored for reaching the silver medal match. In line with this commitment, the government has now offered Phogat three alternatives: a cash prize of ₹4 crore, a government job under Group AOSP, or an SSVP residential plot.
Since Vinesh Phogat currently serves as an MLA, she will be given the option to choose among the three benefits. The government's decision reflects its continued support for athletes and its commitment to recognizing sporting achievements, regardless of unforeseen disqualifications.
Phogat’s response to the offer is awaited, and her decision is expected to set a precedent for similar cases in the future.
