Kannada actor Ranya Rao was arrested on Monday night at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru on charges of gold smuggling. Authorities reportedly apprehended her while she was attempting to bring 14.8 kilograms of gold from Dubai to India.
Rao, who is the stepdaughter of Ramachandra Rao, Director General of Police (Police Housing Corporation), was taken into custody by officials from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), according to a report by news agency ANI. She was presented before an economic offenses court the following day and was remanded to 14 days in judicial custody.
How Authorities Apprehended Ranya Rao
Ranya Rao was traveling from Dubai to Bengaluru on an Emirates flight when officials detained her. She had been under surveillance due to the frequent nature of her trips to Dubai.
According to a PTI report, investigators became suspicious after noticing that she had traveled to Dubai four times within a span of 15 days, prompting a targeted operation. Meanwhile, ANI reported that the DRI had received a tip-off regarding her alleged involvement in gold smuggling and had stationed officials at the airport hours before her arrival. She was arrested immediately after her flight landed around 7 PM.
Smuggling Modus Operandi
Preliminary investigations suggest that Rao concealed a portion of the gold by wearing it, while the rest was hidden in her clothing. Officials suspect she may have leveraged her connections to bypass customs inspections before her eventual arrest. Authorities allege that the 14.8 kilograms of gold in her possession were intended for illegal smuggling into India.
When questioned, Rao maintained that her frequent trips to Dubai were for business purposes, ANI reported.
Ranya Rao made her acting debut in 2014 with the Kannada film Maanikya, directed by and starring Sudeep. She later expanded her career into Tamil cinema, making her debut in 2016 with Wagah, where she starred opposite Vikram Prabhu.
