March 29, 2025: Skygazers across the world are set to witness a stunning partial solar eclipse on Saturday, with the celestial event being visible across parts of North and South America, Europe, Africa, northern Asia, Greenland, and Iceland.
Global Visibility and Timings
According to NASA, different regions will experience the eclipse at different times. In much of the Americas, including the northeastern United States, the eclipse will already be in progress at sunrise. In western Europe and northwestern Africa, the event will begin by mid-to-late morning, while in eastern Europe and northern Asia, the eclipse will unfold in the afternoon or early evening.
Indian viewers, however, will miss out on the event, as the eclipse will not be visible from the country. In Indian Standard Time (IST), the partial solar eclipse is expected to begin at 2:20 PM, peak at 4:17 PM, and conclude by 6:13 PM, lasting nearly four hours.
A Rare "Double Sunrise" Phenomenon
One of the most fascinating aspects of this solar eclipse is the "double sunrise" effect, which will be observed in select regions of the United States and Canada. This rare optical illusion occurs when the Moon's silhouette momentarily obstructs the Sun, causing the Sun to appear as though it is rising twice, with distinct “horns” peeking above the horizon.
Viewing Safety Measures
Experts have cautioned that regular sunglasses are not sufficient to safely view the eclipse. To protect the eyes, solar viewing glasses or eclipse filters are essential. Looking directly at the Sun during an eclipse can cause serious eye damage.
Where to Watch the Solar Eclipse Online?
For those unable to witness the event in person, several astronomical agencies and observatories will be livestreaming the eclipse on YouTube and other online platforms.
This partial solar eclipse serves as a prelude to the much-anticipated total solar eclipse on August 12, 2026, which will be visible across Greenland, Iceland, and parts of Spain.
