Chennai/New Delhi: The ongoing controversy over the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the alleged imposition of Hindi in Tamil Nadu has intensified, with DMK leader TKS Elangovan strongly rebuking actor-turned-politician Pawan Kalyan over his remarks. Elangovan accused Kalyan of hypocrisy and ignorance about Tamil Nadu’s political history, adding that his statements were aimed at appeasing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister and Jana Sena Party (JSP) leader, Pawan Kalyan, recently criticized Tamil Nadu politicians for their stance against Hindi while allowing Tamil films to be dubbed in the language for financial gain.
"Why do Tamil Nadu leaders oppose Hindi while benefiting from Bollywood? They dub their movies in Hindi to make money, yet claim Hindi imposition is a problem. What kind of logic is that?" Kalyan said while addressing his party’s 12th foundation day event in Pithampuram, Kakinada.
DMK Rejects Pawan Kalyan’s Allegations
Hitting back, DMK leader TKS Elangovan dismissed Kalyan’s claims, emphasizing that Tamil Nadu’s resistance to Hindi dates back to 1938, long before the JSP leader’s birth.
"We have opposed Hindi imposition since 1938 and passed legislation in 1968 to uphold the two-language formula—Tamil and English—based on expert recommendations, not the opinions of actors," Elangovan stated.
He further alleged that Kalyan’s remarks were strategically aimed at gaining political favor from the BJP, which has long advocated for Hindi as a national link language.
AIADMK Joins the Debate
Adding to the controversy, AIADMK spokesperson Kovai Sathyan accused the ruling DMK of using the National Education Policy (NEP) issue for political gains while dismissing Pawan Kalyan’s argument as a misleading comparison between business and Tamil cultural identity.
"The DMK is exploiting the NEP for political mileage, but Pawan Kalyan’s stance is also flawed. Dubbing Tamil films in Hindi is a commercial decision, whereas language policy is about culture and identity. NEP is seen as a backdoor strategy for Hindi imposition, which we strongly oppose," Sathyan told ANI.
NEP Controversy in Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu’s DMK-led government has been a vocal critic of the three-language formula introduced under NEP 2020, arguing that it is a ploy to enforce Hindi dominance.
Last month, Chief Minister MK Stalin reaffirmed his commitment to resisting the policy, stating:
"Even if the Centre offers ₹10,000 crore, Tamil Nadu will not implement the NEP. Our stance is firm—Tamil and English will remain the only languages in our education system."
As the political battle over language and education policy escalates, the Tamil Nadu government remains resolute in opposing Hindi imposition, while critics accuse the BJP-led Centre of using NEP as a tool to push a broader linguistic agenda.
