Trump Resumes 'Maximum Pressure' on Iran, Tehran Stands Firm

Washington, D.C./Tehran The United States has reinstated its policy of "maximum pressure" on Iran following President Donald Trump's return to the White House. One of his first actions after taking office was to revive the aggressive stance aimed at preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

President Trump has emphasized that his goal is to secure a deal that ensures Iran will never develop a nuclear arsenal. He believes that maintaining maximum pressure is the only way to achieve this objective. However, Tehran remains defiant in the face of renewed sanctions and diplomatic isolation.

Iranian President Masud Pesan has dismissed Trump's approach, refusing to succumb to threats and ultimatums. "We are ordering you not to do this and not to do that, or we’ll do this. If that’s the case, I’m not coming to negotiate with you at all. Go and do whatever the hell you want," Pesan stated in response to the U.S. demands.

Pesan further stressed Iran’s commitment to maintaining its sovereignty and dignity. "We need to have a relationship with the world. We don’t want to break off with anyone, we don’t want to fight with anyone, but we’re not supposed to bow in humiliation to anyone."

The Iranian president also drew parallels between Trump's treatment of his country and the treatment of Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky during previous diplomatic exchanges. Pesan argued that Iran would not tolerate being treated in a similarly disrespectful manner.

Trump’s Response and the Letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader

In response to Iran’s stance, President Trump has maintained that Iran has two options—military confrontation or peace negotiations. "Very, very soon you’ll be talking about that pretty soon, I guess, and hopefully we can have a peace deal," Trump said. "I’d rather see a peace deal than the other, but the other will solve the problem."

Reports indicate that Trump has sent a letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, through an Emirati delegation. However, considering Tehran’s firm position, it remains uncertain whether the letter will receive the desired response from Iranian leadership.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Echoes the Concerns

Ayatollah Khamenei also weighed in on the matter, asserting that negotiations under duress would not be productive. "Some bullying governments insist on negotiation, but their negotiation is not aimed at resolving issues—it’s for domination," Khamenei stated. "They’ll raise new demands, and these new demands will certainly not be met by Iran."

Khamenei warned that U.S. demands would likely extend beyond nuclear restrictions to include Iran’s ballistic missile capabilities and foreign policy decisions. "Don’t do this, don’t meet that person, don’t go to that place, don’t produce that thing. Your missile range shouldn’t exceed such and such a distance. Can anyone accept these things?"

Lingering Distrust from the 2015 Nuclear Deal Collapse

Many in Iran view Trump's outreach with skepticism, given his unilateral withdrawal from the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2018, despite Iran’s compliance with the agreement. The maximum pressure campaign was previously implemented after Trump abandoned the deal, leading to heightened tensions in the region.

Iranian officials argue that their hesitancy to return to talks is justified, as they have already experienced the U.S. reneging on a prior nuclear agreement. "Why should Tehran believe him now, especially under pressure?" asked a senior Iranian diplomat.

China and Russia Offer a Diplomatic Alternative

As tensions with Washington escalate, Iran is looking to China and Russia for diplomatic support. Beijing is set to host a trilateral nuclear summit on March 14, featuring Iranian and Russian officials. Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov, and Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi are expected to attend.

The summit aims to discuss Iran’s nuclear program and broader geopolitical concerns. However, Western nations are likely to dismiss any resolutions emerging from the meeting. European officials remain skeptical of Russian and Chinese assurances regarding Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

Conclusion: A Deepening Divide

The latest developments underscore the widening chasm between Iran and the United States. With Tehran doubling down on its defiance and Trump resuming his hardline stance, the prospects for diplomacy appear dim. Meanwhile, Iran’s engagement with China and Russia signals a potential shift in alliances that could further complicate future negotiations.
