British Prime Minister Keir Starmer extended a warm welcome to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in London on Saturday, following a tense meeting between Zelenskiy and U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House.
The Ukrainian leader’s visit comes after an extraordinary Oval Office exchange, where Trump reportedly threatened to withdraw U.S. support for Ukraine, three years after Russia’s full-scale invasion. The diplomatic fallout has prompted European leaders to reaffirm their backing for Kyiv.
In a bid to ease tensions, French President Emmanuel Macron spoke with both Zelenskiy and Trump on Saturday, later urging restraint in an interview addressing the developments in Washington.
Strong UK Support for Ukraine
As Zelenskiy arrived at 10 Downing Street, a crowd gathered to express solidarity with Ukraine. During their meeting, Starmer emphasized Britain’s unwavering commitment to Kyiv’s cause.
"I hope you heard some of that cheering in the street. That is the people of the United Kingdom coming out to demonstrate how much they support you … and our absolute determination to stand with you," Starmer told Zelenskiy.
The British Prime Minister further assured the Ukrainian leader of "full backing across the United Kingdom."
Focus on European Unity
Zelenskiy’s visit to London precedes a crucial summit of European leaders on Sunday, where discussions will center on a proposed peace plan for Ukraine. As tensions rise over the future of Western aid, the gathering is expected to reinforce Europe's role in supporting Ukraine’s defense and reconstruction efforts.
The meetings in London and the upcoming summit signal a renewed push for diplomatic coordination, as European allies seek to navigate geopolitical challenges and maintain unity in the face of shifting U.S. policy.
