US Issues Travel Advisory Warning Against Travel to Pakistan Due to Security Threats

Washington, D.C. – The United States has issued a fresh travel advisory, urging its citizens to reconsider travel to Pakistan due to the persistent threat of terrorism and the potential for armed conflict. The advisory, reissued on Sunday, specifically warns against traveling to the India-Pakistan border, including areas along the Line of Control (LoC), as well as the provinces of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where security risks remain significantly high.

Heightened Terror Threats in Pakistan

According to the US Department of State, extremist groups continue to plot and execute attacks in Pakistan, particularly in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including the former Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). These regions frequently witness large-scale terrorist incidents, resulting in high civilian casualties.

The advisory highlights the indiscriminate nature of terror attacks, which target civilians, local military and police personnel, as well as high-profile locations such as transportation hubs, markets, shopping malls, military installations, airports, universities, tourist attractions, schools, hospitals, places of worship, and government facilities.

“Terrorists have targeted US diplomats and diplomatic facilities in the past, and they may attack with little or no warning,” the advisory states.

India-Pakistan Border Declared a No-Travel Zone

The advisory explicitly warns against traveling to the India-Pakistan border, including areas along the Line of Control, citing the presence of militant groups and the heavy military deployment by both nations.

“Do not travel to the India-Pakistan border, including areas along the Line of Control, for any reason,” the statement emphasized. The only official border crossing available to non-Indian and non-Pakistani citizens is the Wagah-Attari crossing in Punjab, and travelers are advised to confirm its operational status before making any travel plans. Additionally, an Indian visa is required to enter India, and no visa services are available at the border.

‘Level 4: Do Not Travel’ Warning for High-Risk Provinces

The US government has maintained its Level 4: Do Not Travel warning for Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and FATA, citing ongoing insurgency, terrorist activities, and security force operations. These regions are known to harbor active terrorist and insurgent groups that routinely conduct attacks against civilians, non-governmental organizations, government offices, and security forces.

Pakistan’s Security Situation ‘Remains Fluid’

The advisory underscores the volatile security environment in Pakistan, noting that conditions can change rapidly with little or no warning. While major cities, particularly Islamabad, have greater security resources and infrastructure, emergency response capabilities remain limited in other parts of the country.

Given the evolving threat landscape, US citizens are advised to exercise extreme caution, avoid non-essential travel, and stay updated with official advisories and security developments before considering any visit to Pakistan.
