New Delhi, April 19, 2025 — India has issued a strong condemnation of the brutal killing of Bhabesh Chandra Roy, a prominent leader of the Hindu minority community in Bangladesh, describing the incident as part of a "pattern of systematic persecution" under the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.
Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), expressed grave concern over the incident. “We have noted with distress the abduction and brutal killing of Bhabesh Chandra Roy, a Hindu minority leader in Bangladesh. This killing follows a pattern of systematic persecution of Hindu minorities under the interim government, even as the perpetrators of previous such incidents continue to operate with impunity,” he stated. “We condemn this act and once again urge the interim government to uphold its responsibility to protect all minorities, including Hindus, without offering excuses or drawing distinctions.”
Bhabesh Chandra Roy, 58, served as vice-president of the Biral unit of the Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad and was a respected figure within the Hindu community in Biral upazila, Dinajpur district.
According to his wife, Shantana Roy, Bhabesh received a phone call at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, reportedly from his assailants confirming his presence at home. About half an hour later, four unidentified men arrived on two motorcycles and abducted him.
As reported by The Daily Star, eyewitnesses claimed that Bhabesh was taken to Narabari village, where he was brutally assaulted. Later that evening, the attackers allegedly returned his unconscious body to his home in a van. Family members and local residents rushed him to the Biral Upazila Health Complex, from where he was transferred to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital. He was declared dead on arrival.
Authorities have since sent his body for autopsy. Abdus Sabur, officer-in-charge of the Biral police station, confirmed that preparations are underway to register a formal case and that efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage among human rights organizations and diaspora communities, who have long voiced concerns over the deteriorating security situation faced by religious minorities in Bangladesh.
