Baramulla/Srinagar, April 23, 2025 — In a swift counter-terror operation following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, the Indian Army successfully thwarted an infiltration attempt along the Line of Control (LoC) in Baramulla district, eliminating two terrorists in a fierce exchange of fire.
According to official sources, the infiltration bid occurred in the general area of Sarjeevan at Uri Nala, where alert troops detected movement of approximately two to three unidentified militants attempting to breach the LoC. Upon being challenged, the terrorists opened fire, triggering a heavy gunfight with Indian security forces.
The Indian Army confirmed the success of the operation through its Chinar Corps' official X (formerly Twitter) handle, stating:
"Heavy exchange of fire between security forces and terrorists. Two terrorists eliminated. Infiltration bid foiled. Large cache of arms, ammunition and war-like stores recovered. Operation in progress."
This high-alert response comes just 24 hours after a devastating terrorist attack in Pahalgam claimed the lives of 26 civilians, including foreign tourists. The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, has claimed responsibility for the massacre, which took place around 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Eyewitness accounts from Pahalgam painted a chilling picture of the attack, as gunfire erupted in the popular Baisaran meadows, leaving tourists scrambling for cover amid chaos and confusion. Survivors described scenes of panic, noting the attackers were dressed in military fatigues and selectively targeted victims after inquiring about their religious identity.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was on an official visit to Saudi Arabia at the time, cut short his trip and returned to New Delhi early Wednesday. Upon landing, he chaired a high-level security briefing and scheduled a Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting to assess the situation and coordinate a national-level response.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to visit Pahalgam for a comprehensive security review and to meet the families of the victims. Shah earlier convened an emergency meeting with top officials and directed enhanced counter-terror operations across the Kashmir Valley.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah called the Pahalgam attack an "abomination," while former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti condemned the violence as “senseless and cowardly.” Political leaders across the spectrum have united in expressing grief, extending condolences to the bereaved families, and reaffirming their support for stronger counter-terror efforts.
In the wake of the escalating security threat, intensified search operations have been launched throughout the Valley, with a focus on flushing out sleeper cells and intercepting further infiltration attempts along the LoC. Senior officials of the Indian Army, NIA, and paramilitary forces are closely monitoring the evolving situation.
