Kashmir- A Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) of the Indian Army lost his life in an encounter with militants along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Akhnoor sector, Jammu, according to defence officials. The officials noted that the infiltration attempt by the militants was successfully thwarted.
Alert army personnel detected suspicious movement by a group of heavily armed terrorists near a stream in a forward forest area of the Keri Bhattal region late Friday night. This led to a confrontation and a subsequent intense gunfight. The JCO, identified as Kuldeep Chand, sustained injuries during the encounter and later succumbed to them, the officials added. The area has been cordoned off, and a search operation is currently underway to apprehend the remaining militants.
The White Knight Corps of the Indian Army paid tribute via a post on X, stating: “#GOC #WhiteKnightCorps and all ranks salute the supreme sacrifice of #Braveheart Sub Kuldeep Chand of 9 PUNJAB. He laid down his life while gallantly leading a #CounterInfiltration operation along the #LineofControl in the #Keri-#Battal area of #Sunderbani on the night of 11 Apr 2025.”
This incident follows a similar event on February 11 in the same area, where two army personnel, including a captain, were killed, and another was injured due to an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attack by terrorists.
The latest encounter comes two days after India and Pakistan held a brigade commander-level flag meeting in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district to address border management concerns. This marked the second such meeting since February, aimed at de-escalating tensions following nearly a dozen cross-border firing incidents and an IED attack. The Indian Army raised a strong protest with their Pakistani counterparts regarding cross-border terrorist activities and ceasefire violations. Notably, ceasefire breaches along the LoC have been rare since India and Pakistan renewed their ceasefire agreement on February 25, 2021.
