Washington, D.C. — A broad coalition of progressive, labor, and environmental organizations is preparing for what could become one of the largest single-day protests in recent U.S. history. According to organizers, over 500,000 Americans are expected to take to the streets on Saturday in Washington, D.C., Florida, and across all 50 states to oppose what they describe as former President Donald Trump’s “authoritarian overreach and billionaire-driven agenda.”
The national day of action, branded “Hands Off”, is being spearheaded by MoveOn, in collaboration with more than a thousand allied groups, including Indivisible, labor unions, civil rights advocates, and climate justice organizations. Demonstrations are planned at over 1,000 locations, with significant gatherings expected at state capitols and a major rally on the National Mall in Washington.
“This is shaping up to be the biggest single-day protest in recent American history,” said Ezra Levin, co-founder of Indivisible, during a recent organizing call.
The Washington D.C. event is set to feature prominent Democratic members of Congress, including Rep. Jamie Raskin (MD), Rep. Maxwell Frost (FL), and Rep. Ilhan Omar (MN), who will address the crowd in a show of unified opposition to what organizers characterize as a radical agenda.
A statement on the official protest website outlines the coalition’s message:
“This is a nationwide mobilization to stop the most brazen power grab in modern history. Trump, [Elon] Musk, and their billionaire allies are orchestrating an all-out assault on our government, economy, and rights – and Congress has enabled them every step of the way.”
Organizers accuse the Trump-aligned agenda of threatening to dismantle key public institutions by defunding social security, slashing Medicaid, firing essential public workers, and removing consumer protections – all while advancing tax benefits for the ultra-wealthy.
“This movement is about protecting democracy, economic fairness, and the future of public services for all Americans,” the coalition states.
The timing of the protests coincides with heightened economic anxiety following Trump’s April 1 announcement of sweeping tariffs, which sent stock markets into a downward spiral. Despite the economic fallout, Trump remained defiant, stating on Friday: “My policies will never change.”
A Reuters poll released this week reported Trump’s approval rating had dipped to 43%, his lowest point since retaking office.
Saturday’s protests recall the momentum of the 2017 Women’s March, which mobilized more than 470,000 participants in Washington, D.C. alone, tripling the crowd size of Trump’s 2016 inauguration, and mobilizing millions more in cities nationwide — a benchmark of mass resistance many organizers believe they are poised to match or exceed.
