New Delhi – In the aftermath of the horrific terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 tourists and injured several others, India has stepped up its diplomatic and military response. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking at a public event in Madhubani, Bihar, issued a strong statement condemning the attack, vowing that the perpetrators would be pursued “to the end of the Earth.”
"The nation stands united in its resolve against terrorism," the Prime Minister declared. “Every effort will be made to ensure that justice is delivered.”
As a significant diplomatic measure, India has officially notified Pakistan of its decision to keep the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance with immediate effect, citing Islamabad’s breach of the treaty’s conditions. This move comes as part of a broader strategy to apply diplomatic pressure following the terror strike.
An all-party meeting convened on Thursday by the BJP-led central government underscored the gravity of the situation. Leaders across the political spectrum were briefed on the Pahalgam attack, which officials said was an attempt to "vitiate the country’s atmosphere." The government reiterated its commitment to counter-terrorism efforts and to strengthening national security.
Meanwhile, in Jammu, the wreath-laying ceremony of Havildar J Ali Shaikh, who was martyred in an encounter in Udhampur on Thursday, was held with full military honors.
International Condemnation and Solidarity
Expressions of support and solidarity have poured in from across the world. French President Emmanuel Macron held a telephonic conversation with PM Modi and offered condolences on behalf of France. Similarly, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed grief over the loss of innocent lives, reaffirming Israel's support for India.
In the United Kingdom, supporters gathered outside the Indian High Commission in London to stand in solidarity with the victims. Kuldeep Singh Shekhawat, President of Overseas Friends of BJP UK, condemned the violence and urged strong retaliatory action. “India will react in a very powerful way,” he said.
From the United States, both President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio condemned the attack. US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce called for the perpetrators to be brought to justice. Elbridge Colby, US Under Secretary for Defence, tweeted, “India is a model ally… We stand with them in this dark hour.”
Internal Security Response
Markets in Delhi’s Chandni Chowk remained shut on Thursday in protest, as traders observed a Bandh to mourn the victims. The government, meanwhile, is reportedly mulling the cessation of the ceasefire agreement with Pakistan, citing repeated violations along the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border.
Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi is set to arrive in Srinagar and Udhampur to review the security situation firsthand. He will also visit Baisaran Meadows, the site of the attack, and meet senior commanders and intelligence officials.
Simultaneously, a gunfight erupted in Bandipora district during a search operation, following reports of terrorist presence in the Kulnar Bazipora area. Security forces responded effectively, and no casualties have been reported so far.
RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat, addressing an event, commented that the Pahalgam terrorists had selectively targeted victims based on their religion. “The fight is between Dharma and Adharma,” he said, adding that “evil people should be eliminated.”
Rising Tensions
In Islamabad, tense scenes were reported outside the Indian High Commission, with protesters reacting to India’s recent diplomatic decisions, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty.
As India enters a period of mourning and reflection, its leadership has made clear that those behind the Pahalgam tragedy will be held accountable — both on the ground and on the international stage.
