Nantes, France | April 24, 2025 — A violent incident at a private high school in western France has left one student dead and three others injured, following a stabbing attack carried out by a fellow student during a lunch break on Thursday.
Authorities confirmed the attack occurred at the Notre-Dame-de-Toutes-Aides High School in Nantes, a private Catholic institution situated on France’s Atlantic coast. The suspect, a 15-year-old male student, was subdued by faculty members and taken into custody by police shortly thereafter.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear. A spokesperson for the national police, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that there is currently no indication of a terrorist connection. Law enforcement and emergency services responded swiftly, securing the school and beginning a formal investigation.
"This tragic act has shaken the entire school community," said French Education Minister Élisabeth Borne, who announced via social media platform X that she, along with Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, was en route to Nantes to offer support and assess the situation on the ground.
Local officials confirmed that the attack took place during the lunch period, when the perpetrator used a knife to stab four students. One victim succumbed to injuries, while three others remain hospitalized. Their conditions have not been disclosed.
Visuals from the scene showed a heavy police and military presence surrounding the school, which shares a campus with a primary and middle school. In a brief statement, a school official declined to comment on the incident itself, stating only that the institution's immediate focus was the welfare and psychological support of the students present at the time of the attack.
