Mexican Navy Training Ship Collides with Brooklyn Bridge, Injuring 19

New York, May 18, 2025 — A Mexican Navy training vessel, the ARM Cuauhtémoc, collided with the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday, injuring 19 people and triggering a swift emergency response. The incident occurred during a departure maneuver as the three-masted tall ship sailed away from Manhattan en route to New York Harbor.

The vessel, carrying 277 crew members, was navigating under the bridge when one of its 147-foot masts struck the underside of the iconic structure. The force of the impact caused two of the ship’s three masts—decorated with lights—to collapse onto the deck, injuring crew members. Authorities confirmed that all 19 injuries occurred onboard, with four reported to be in serious condition.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams confirmed the injury toll and assured the public that emergency services were on-site within minutes. “Our first responders acted quickly and efficiently,” Adams said. “We are praying for those injured and coordinating closely with the Mexican government.”

The Mexican Navy acknowledged the incident in a statement posted in Spanish on social media platform X, stating: “During the departure manoeuvre of the Cuauhtémoc Sailboat in New York, an incident occurred with the Brooklyn Bridge that caused damage to the training ship, temporarily preventing the continuation of the training cruise.”

Video footage posted by eyewitnesses on social media showed the moment of impact, with a mast striking the bridge and crashing to the deck below. Crew members in white sailor uniforms were seen scrambling on the rigging seconds before debris, including shattered lights and rigging components, rained down. In one clip, the bridge visibly shook from the collision.

“So glad I was able to capture the beauty of the Mexican Navy boat before it crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge,” one onlooker wrote on X. Another user remarked, “Just watched the Brooklyn Bridge get smoked live by a boat with a massive Mexican flag.”

Emergency crews also initiated a water rescue operation amid concerns that some individuals may have fallen overboard. Several critically injured victims were transported to nearby hospitals.

New York Attorney General Letitia James expressed concern and support, saying, “We are praying for those involved. Please follow local guidance while our first responders do their jobs.”

Following the crash, all lanes of the Brooklyn Bridge were temporarily closed in both directions but were reopened by 10:30 PM, according to CNN citing city emergency officials.

The ARM Cuauhtémoc, built in Spain in 1982, serves as a naval training ship and is a frequent participant in international maritime events. It was scheduled to be featured in next year’s Sail4th celebrations marking the United States’ 250th anniversary. The future of its participation is now uncertain, pending an assessment of the damage.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the mishap and assess potential structural impacts on the Brooklyn Bridge.
