Ireland/Orihuela Costa, Spain – Two men have been arrested in connection with the attempted murder of a 21-year-old Irish national who remains in critical condition following a shooting incident in southern Spain.
The victim was shot in the head near the Zenia Boulevard Shopping Centre in Orihuela Costa, Alicante province, on the night of May 13. Nearly two weeks after the incident, the young man continues to fight for his life in an intensive care unit.
A spokesperson for the Civil Guard confirmed the arrests, stating: “We have detained two individuals in connection with a shooting that seriously injured a 21-year-old Irish man. The incident occurred near a leisure zone adjacent to the Zenia Boulevard.”
The suspects, aged 27 and 45, were apprehended in Orihuela Costa and the nearby town of Pilar de la Horadada. A search of one of their residences was also carried out as part of the investigation.
Authorities revealed that investigators had conducted extensive inquiries, including collecting witness statements and analysing forensic evidence. Among the recovered items was a bag containing a revolver, ammunition, and the victim’s mobile phone.
Following a court appearance in Orihuela, one of the suspects—believed to be the primary shooter—has been remanded in custody. The second individual has been released on bail under conditions, including a travel ban, and is being treated as a suspected accomplice.
The motive behind the attack remains under investigation. The nationalities of the suspects have not yet been disclosed.
