Centre Unlikely to Convene Special Parliament Session on Operation Sindoor, May Address Issue in Monsoon Session

New DelhiAmid rising demands from the Opposition for a special session of Parliament to discuss Operation Sindoor and related defence developments, government sources on Tuesday indicated that no such session is currently under consideration. With the Monsoon Session of Parliament scheduled for July, the Centre is reportedly of the view that the existing legislative calendar offers an adequate platform for any required deliberations.

Sources within the government dismissed the Opposition’s call as “unjustified”, given the proximity of the Monsoon Session. This follows mounting pressure from the Congress-led Opposition, which has cited recent statements made by Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan as grounds for an immediate discussion in Parliament.

Potential Discussion During Monsoon Session

While ruling out a special session, government insiders confirmed that a Parliamentary discussion on Operation Sindoor is likely during the Monsoon Session. In that context, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh may address both Houses to provide a comprehensive account of the military operation and the events surrounding it.

Simultaneously, the government has also rejected speculation suggesting that a special session is being planned to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Emergency on June 25–26. “There is no truth in this claim—it is a figment of imagination,” sources stated unequivocally.

Opposition Intensifies Pressure Post-Support

The Congress party, which had initially extended support to the government during the May 7–10 military action under Operation Sindoor, has shifted tone in recent weeks. Rahul Gandhi and other senior leaders have raised pointed questions, particularly over the number of Indian fighter jets reportedly lost during the high-intensity cross-border strikes.

The concern was amplified following General Chauhan’s recent remarks at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore. In an interview with Bloomberg TV, the CDS stated:

“What is important is not the jet being down, but why they were down. The good part is that we are able to understand the tactical mistake we made, remedy it, rectify it, and then implement it again after two days.”

The comments have sparked a political storm, with Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge accusing the government of misleading the nation. Kharge reiterated the demand for a special session to ensure full transparency and accountability.

Opposition MPs Petition the Prime Minister

In a coordinated move, over 200 Opposition MPs in the Lok Sabha have signed a formal letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the government to convene a special session focused exclusively on Operation Sindoor and the evolving national security scenario.

Despite these demands, the government's current stance suggests that the issue will be taken up in the normal course of the upcoming session, thereby avoiding an unscheduled convening of Parliament.

As the political narrative around Operation Sindoor continues to evolve, all eyes are now on the Monsoon Session, where the government is expected to present a detailed account of the operation and respond to Opposition concerns.
