India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met with his Russian counterpart Andrey Belousov on Thursday in Qingdao, where both leaders held wide-ranging discussions on regional security, defence cooperation, and ongoing strategic partnerships. The meeting was held on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defence Ministers’ Conclave.
In a social media post following the meeting, Singh described the engagement as “insightful,” noting that the two sides had meaningful deliberations on strengthening bilateral defence ties.
“Happy to have met the Defence Minister of Russia, Andrey Belousov, on the sidelines of the SCO Defence Ministers’ Meeting in Qingdao. We had insightful deliberations on boosting India-Russia defence ties,” Singh posted.
The dialogue between the two ministers covered key areas of military collaboration, including the ongoing delivery of the S-400 missile defence systems, planned upgrades to the Su-30 MKI fleet, and the timely procurement of critical military platforms and components.
Belousov reaffirmed Russia’s longstanding strategic relationship with India, describing it as a partnership that has consistently endured regional and global shifts. He also conveyed Russia’s solidarity with India in the wake of the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
In an official statement issued after the meeting, India’s Ministry of Defence noted that the talks were “among the most significant recent engagements,” particularly in the context of Operation Sindoor, India’s ongoing counter-terror initiative.
The meeting underscores India and Russia’s shared commitment to deepening defence and strategic cooperation amid evolving regional security dynamics and shifting geopolitical landscapes.
