U.S. Federal Agencies Investigated Foreign Nationals Visiting Elon Musk’s Properties

U.S. federal authorities reportedly launched an investigation into foreign nationals who visited properties owned by Elon Musk, amid concerns about potential foreign influence over the billionaire entrepreneur. The probe, conducted between 2022 and 2023 during the Biden administration, was revealed in a Wall Street Journal report citing individuals familiar with the matter.

According to the report, the investigation was spearheaded by the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice. While no charges were filed, officials focused on individuals—primarily from Eastern Europe and other regions—suspected of attempting to exert influence over Musk, whose ventures, including SpaceX and Tesla, maintain extensive U.S. government contracts and access to classified information.

Though Musk reportedly lacks clearance for the nation’s most sensitive national security data, his role as a central figure in both the tech industry and political discourse has drawn increasing scrutiny. His acquisition of Twitter (now rebranded as X) in 2022 intensified his involvement in national politics, with Musk accusing the platform’s prior leadership of censoring conservative voices.

By 2024, Musk had emerged as a prominent supporter of former President Donald Trump’s campaign to return to office. He also served in a temporary advisory capacity in the Trump administration, tasked with exploring strategies to curb federal spending. However, the relationship between the two soured publicly last week after a highly publicized exchange of insults over a contentious spending bill.

According to WSJ, Musk's frequent interactions with foreign nationals prompted unease within his political circle. A source linked to the political action committee supporting Trump revealed that the team implemented rigorous vetting procedures to prevent unauthorized foreign access to Musk.

In a separate and more controversial allegation, WSJ also claimed Musk had been in discreet contact with Russian President Vladimir Putin before Trump’s re-election victory in 2024—a suggestion viewed by some as a potential national security risk. Both Musk and Kremlin officials have firmly denied the claim. Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov dismissed the report as “absolute lies,” clarifying that the only communication between Putin and Musk occurred years ago and pertained solely to technological innovation.

Following his rift with Trump, speculation has arisen among Democratic lawmakers about Musk’s future political affiliations. Although previously a supporter of Democratic candidates, Musk has more recently hinted at forming a centrist political movement, describing it as a party that could represent “the 80% in the middle.”
