AAP Officially Exits INDIA Bloc, Cites Strategic Shift Post-Lok Sabha Polls

In a significant political development, the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has formally withdrawn from the opposition’s Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc. The announcement was made on Friday by senior AAP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, who confirmed that the party will no longer be part of the alliance and will not participate in its forthcoming meetings.

Addressing a press conference, Singh stated, “The AAP has made its position clear. The INDIA bloc was conceived solely for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Since then, we have independently contested the assembly elections in Delhi and Haryana and will continue this approach in the upcoming Bihar polls.”

While AAP had allied with the Congress under the INDIA bloc for the 2024 general elections in Delhi, the two parties opted to contest separately in recent state-level contests, indicating a shift in electoral strategy.

Despite its exit from the bloc, Singh clarified that AAP would continue to engage in issue-based cooperation within Parliament. “On parliamentary matters, we collaborate with opposition parties such as the TMC and DMK, and they with us. We remain committed to playing the role of a constructive and assertive opposition,” he said.

The AAP leader also raised pointed questions about the Congress party’s leadership within the alliance, suggesting a lack of cohesive direction post-elections. “Did the Congress convene a meeting after the Lok Sabha results? Has there been any attempt to expand or consolidate the bloc? On the contrary, we see repeated criticism of key allies like Akhilesh Yadav, Uddhav Thackeray, and Mamata Banerjee. As the largest party in the bloc, has the Congress fulfilled its responsibility in ensuring unity?” Singh asked.

The announcement comes just days ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, which is set to begin on July 21. An online meeting of INDIA bloc leaders has been scheduled for Saturday evening to deliberate on the current political landscape—a gathering that marks the first such engagement since the general election.

AAP’s exit from the alliance underscores the evolving dynamics within the opposition camp, highlighting the challenges of sustaining a cohesive front in the post-election political climate.
