Accused in South Calcutta Law College Gangrape Case Drank Inside Campus After Crime, Say Police

Kolkata, July 6 — In a shocking development, Kolkata Police revealed on Saturday that Monojit Mishra, the prime accused in the alleged gangrape of a student at South Calcutta Law College, consumed alcohol inside the college premises shortly after the incident on June 25.

According to investigators, Mishra and two others—Pramit Mukherjee and Zaib Ahmed—gathered in the institute’s guard room following the alleged assault, where they drank alcohol and instructed the security guard, identified as Pinaki Banerjee, to remain silent about the incident.

"After committing the crime, the three accused drank alcohol in the guard’s room and told the guard not to speak of what had happened," a senior officer said.

Later that night, the trio reportedly visited a roadside eatery on the EM Bypass for dinner before dispersing to their respective homes the following morning.

Attempts to Seek Influence and Concealment

Police sources stated that on June 26, a day after the alleged crime, Mishra attempted to seek help from an “influential individual” in South Kolkata’s Deshapriya Park area. However, the individual declined involvement after sensing the gravity of the situation.

Investigators also found that Mishra sought assistance from others referred to as his “mentors” and travelled across several areas of the city—including Rashbehari, Gariahat, Fern Road, Ballygunge Station Road, and even near the Karaya police station—possibly to avoid detection or orchestrate a defense.

Telecom data revealed consistent communication among the three accused in the days leading up to the incident, prompting police to suggest the crime may have been premeditated.

College Set to Reopen Under Restrictions

In a related development, the South Calcutta Law College administration has announced that the campus will reopen on July 7, with restricted class schedules. According to an official notice issued on Friday, students from the fourth, sixth, and eighth semesters are instructed to report to campus for internal project work between 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on separate days:

  • Fourth semester: Tuesday

  • Sixth semester: Wednesday

  • Eighth semester: Thursday

The college's vice-principal further stated that, effective July 7, entry during office hours (8 a.m. to 2 p.m.) will be strictly limited to individuals with valid identification and official reasons.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage and raised serious concerns about campus safety, institutional accountability, and the alleged complicity of security personnel.
