Carndonagh, Co Donegal – The community of Carndonagh is in mourning following the tragic deaths of Natalie McLaughlin and her six-year-old daughter, Ella, in a two-vehicle collision that occurred on Wednesday evening along the R240 near Glentogher.
Natalie, aged in her 20s, and young Ella lost their lives after their car collided with a van. Ella was pronounced dead at the scene, while Natalie succumbed to her injuries the following evening at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast after initially being treated at Altnagelvin Hospital in Co Derry.
A well-known and deeply respected member of the Carndonagh community, Natalie worked as a nurse at a local doctor’s surgery. Her partner, Tyrone Irwin—Ella’s father—remains in serious condition at Altnagelvin Hospital. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. The couple’s younger daughter, two-year-old Rhea Rose, was also injured in the crash and has been transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital for specialist care. Her condition is reported as stable, and her injuries are not considered life-threatening.
The driver of the van, a man in his late teens, was treated at the scene. His injuries are understood to be minor.
Funeral Arrangements Announced
Natalie and Ella will be laid to rest on Monday, July 8, in their hometown of Carndonagh. The mother and daughter will repose at the home of Natalie’s parents, Joanne and Danny McLaughlin, on Church Road (F93 HY8V), where mourners may pay their respects on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.. All other times, including the morning of the funeral, are reserved for private reflection.
A funeral mass will be held at 12:00 noon on Monday at the Sacred Heart Church in Carndonagh, followed by burial at the adjoining cemetery.
In a heartfelt death notice, Natalie and Ella were remembered as the “much loved mother and sister of Rhea-Rose and cherished daughter and granddaughter of Joanne and Danny, and adored sister and niece of Lara, Tiarnan, and Ryan.”
“Deeply regretted and sadly missed by their grandparents and great-grandparents, Lynn and Anthony Noone and Margaret and Hugh McLaughlin, Natalie’s partner Tyrone, nieces and nephews, extended family, friends, and neighbours.

School Pays Emotional Tribute
St Patrick's Girls National School in Carndonagh, where both Natalie and Ella had strong ties, issued a moving tribute to the mother and daughter.
In a public statement, the school described the loss as “an unimaginable tragedy” and extended its deepest sympathies to the family.
“This is an unimaginable tragedy for their family, for our school, and for the entire community. We are heartbroken, and our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Ella and Natalie’s family – including Ella’s baby sister, Natalie’s partner, parents and siblings – and their many friends,” the statement read.
“Ella was a joyful and much-loved pupil in our school.”
The community of Carndonagh continues to come together in grief, offering support and prayers to the bereaved family during this profoundly difficult time.
