Patna | July 8, 2025 — In a decisive policy move ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, the Bihar government, led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, has approved 35% reservation for women in all government jobs and services. The reservation will apply to women who are permanent residents of Bihar and will be implemented across all direct recruitment processes in the state’s public sector.
The decision was ratified during a Cabinet meeting held earlier this week and is being seen as a major step towards enhancing gender representation and economic empowerment for women in the state.
Youth Commission to Address Employment and Education
Alongside the reservation policy, the Bihar Cabinet also approved the formation of the Bihar Youth Commission, which will function as an advisory body to the government on matters related to youth education, training, and employment.
Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Chief Minister Nitish Kumar stated:
“With the aim of expanding employment opportunities, empowering our youth, and enhancing their capabilities, the Cabinet has approved the formation of the Bihar Youth Commission.”
According to official details, the commission will comprise one Chairperson, two Vice-Chairpersons, and seven Members, all below the age of 45. The body will monitor implementation of youth-centric initiatives and advocate for the prioritisation of local youth in private sector employment within Bihar, while also safeguarding the interests of Bihari youth studying or working outside the state.
Boost to Social Welfare: Pension Hike for the Elderly
Further underscoring the government’s focus on social welfare, Chief Minister Kumar recently announced a substantial increase in the Social Security Pension Scheme. The monthly pension has been raised from ₹400 to ₹1,100, with disbursements beginning in July. Payments will be credited to beneficiaries’ accounts on the 10th of every month.
“The elderly are a valuable part of our society. Ensuring their dignity and well-being remains a top priority for the government,” Kumar said.
A Strategic Shift Ahead of Elections
The announcement of both women’s reservation and the Youth Commission is widely viewed as a strategic electoral move aimed at two crucial voter bases—women and youth. With these decisions, the Nitish Kumar government seeks to reinforce its pro-welfare image while addressing long-standing demands for inclusive development and equitable opportunities.
