In a dramatic escalation of his political involvement, tech magnate Elon Musk has announced the formation of a new political party—The America Party—aimed at disrupting what he described as the United States’ entrenched “one-party system.” The move comes following a highly publicized falling out with U.S. President Donald Trump, once a close ally and key beneficiary of Musk’s support during the 2024 presidential campaign.
Musk, the world’s richest individual and the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, made the announcement via his social media platform X. “When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste and graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy,” Musk declared. “Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
The billionaire’s decision follows his fierce opposition to Trump’s sweeping domestic spending initiative, which Musk derided as a “disgusting abomination.” The legislation, referred to by Trump as “One Big Beautiful Bill,” has deepened divisions between the two former allies. Musk, who previously chaired the Republican-led Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), warned that the bill would balloon the national debt and labeled its GOP supporters as enablers of “debt slavery.”
Earlier this week, President Trump reportedly threatened to revoke billions in federal subsidies granted to Musk’s companies and even suggested deporting the SpaceX chief.
Doubling down on his opposition, Musk pledged to mobilize his resources against lawmakers who backed the spending bill. “They will lose their primary next year if it’s the last thing I do on this Earth,” he stated.
In a follow-up post, Musk cited the example of Epaminondas’s military tactics at the Battle of Leuctra, vowing to apply a strategy of “extremely concentrated force at a precise location on the battlefield” to disrupt what he called the “uniparty system.”
Musk also launched a viral Independence Day poll on X, asking users whether they desired “independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system.” The poll received over 1.2 million responses, with a two-to-one margin in favor of a new political movement. “You want a new political party, and you shall have it!” Musk declared.
Among the memes shared during this campaign was a symbolic image of a two-headed snake captioned “End the Uniparty.”
Targeted Strategy for Political Disruption
Musk has hinted at entering the political arena directly, responding “Next year” when asked if he would contest the 2026 midterms or the 2028 presidential election.
Laying out a focused electoral strategy, Musk suggested concentrating efforts on a small number of competitive races. “One way to execute on this would be to laser-focus on just 2 or 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts,” he wrote.
With all 435 House seats and one-third of the Senate seats up for election every two years, Musk appears poised to wield his influence in shaping key outcomes on Capitol Hill.
As the rivalry between Musk and Trump intensifies, the formation of the America Party marks a seismic shift in the U.S. political landscape—one that could fundamentally alter the balance of power in upcoming elections.
