Nationwide General Strike by 10 Major Trade Unions Disrupts Services Across India

NEW DELHI / THIRUVANANTHAPURAM • A 24-hour nationwide general strike called by 10 opposition-backed trade unions is underway in protest against what they allege are the central government's anti-labour policies. The strike has seen widespread participation across various sectors, with unofficial estimates suggesting that over 250 million workers from public sector enterprises and other industries have joined the protest.

The Kerala government has declared a dies non for the day, meaning government employees taking leave will not be granted pay, in an effort to curb absenteeism. Nevertheless, the strike has seen near-total compliance across the state.

In Kerala, all scheduled university examinations for the day have been postponed, including those at the University of Kerala, Mahatma Gandhi University, Calicut University, and Kannur University. The strike is expected to continue until midnight tonight.

Widespread Disruptions Across Kerala

Public transport has been heavily affected, particularly in the capital city of Thiruvananthapuram. The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has suspended its regular bus services. While employees reported to duty at depots following the dies non order, no services are being operated. Passengers arriving at KSRTC depots are being informed that services are unavailable and are being turned away.

Shops and commercial establishments remain closed, and only private vehicles are seen operating on the roads. In Thiruvananthapuram, police have arranged alternate transport facilities for passengers arriving at the central railway station, with services extending even to RCC (Regional Cancer Centre).

Attempts to resume KSRTC operations in Kochi and Thrissur were reportedly blocked by strike supporters. Authorities have instructed depots that any services must be operated only under police protection.

The strike highlights growing concerns among the workforce over the implementation of the Centre's new labour codes, which union leaders claim dilute workers' rights, allow unchecked contractual employment, and reduce social security protections.

The central government has yet to respond officially to today’s industrial action. However, the scale and coordination of the protest underscore the rising discontent among labour groups nationwide.
