President Trump to Dispatch Tariff Notifications; Reciprocal Measures to Begin August 1

Washington D.C., July 7: U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that the first set of official tariff notifications and trade deal communications will be dispatched to various countries starting Monday, July 7, at 12:00 p.m. Eastern Time (9:30 p.m. IST). These letters will outline a new framework of reciprocal tariff rates scheduled to take effect from August 1.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, President Trump stated:

“I am pleased to announce that the UNITED STATES TARIFF Letters, and/or Deals, with various Countries from around the World, will be delivered starting 12:00 P.M. (Eastern), Monday, July 7th. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

The U.S. administration had initially planned to implement the reciprocal tariffs on July 9, following a 90-day consultation period that began in April. However, the timeline has now been extended to August 1 to allow ongoing trade negotiations to reach a conclusion.

Speaking to reporters alongside Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, President Trump elaborated that the letters would be sent to approximately 12 to 15 trade partners, with some communications expected to be dispatched over the following days. He also indicated that in addition to formal notices, preliminary trade agreements with some nations have already been reached.

Additional Tariffs on BRICS-Aligned Countries

In a move likely to intensify geopolitical tensions, President Trump warned that nations aligning themselves with the BRICS bloc—comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—could face an additional 10% tariff on exports to the U.S.

“Any Country aligning themselves with the Anti-American policies of BRICS will be charged an ADDITIONAL 10% Tariff,” the President declared.

This statement follows a strong response from BRICS leaders, who criticized U.S. tariff actions as harmful to the global economy. In a joint declaration, BRICS member states described Washington’s tariff measures as “illegal and arbitrary,” warning that they threaten to further destabilize global trade flows.

India-U.S. Trade Talks Reach Crucial Phase

Meanwhile, trade negotiations between India and the United States are nearing a critical juncture. According to CNBC-TV18, both sides are expected to finalize a limited-scope “mini trade deal” within the next 24 to 48 hours. The proposed agreement may include annual quotas and lower tariffs for select labor-intensive Indian exports, as well as duty concessions on certain American agricultural products, such as pecans and blueberries.

India has maintained a cautious stance, emphasizing that any agreement must align with national interests. Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal reaffirmed New Delhi’s position, stating that deadlines would not dictate the outcome.

Earlier this year, the U.S. imposed a 26% reciprocal tariff on select Indian goods, though its implementation was suspended for 90 days pending negotiations. While India had sought a complete withdrawal of these measures, sources indicate that partial relief—primarily for agricultural imports—has been accepted.

With India having “drawn its red lines,” sources told news agency PTI that the onus now lies with Washington to conclude the final agreement.
