Tragedy at Sharda University: BDS Student Dies by Suicide, Alleges Faculty Harassment in Note

A second-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) student at Sharda University, Greater Noida, died by suicide in her hostel room on Monday, sparking widespread outrage and protests on campus. The student, whose identity has been withheld, reportedly left behind a suicide note in which she accused certain faculty members of persistent mental harassment and humiliation.

The incident occurred within the premises of the university hostel, under the jurisdiction of Knowledge Park Police Station. According to authorities, the suicide note named two faculty members from the departments of PCP and Dental Materials, holding them directly responsible for creating an environment of emotional distress that allegedly drove her to take the extreme step.

The student’s note demanded that those responsible be held accountable for their actions, explicitly stating that the faculty should face consequences in the event of her death.

Campus Unrest and Police Intervention

News of the tragedy triggered immediate unrest on campus, with students gathering in large numbers to demand justice. The protest quickly escalated into a confrontation, with clashes reported between the agitating students and police personnel deployed at the scene.

In response to a formal complaint lodged by the deceased student’s family, local police took swift action. “Two staff members from the university’s management have been arrested based on the family's complaint,” confirmed Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Greater Noida, Sudhir Kumar. The case remains under active investigation.

A Disturbing Pattern?

This incident comes on the heels of another harrowing case from Odisha’s Balasore district, where a college student succumbed to burn injuries after allegedly setting herself on fire due to harassment by a faculty member. The back-to-back tragedies have reignited urgent conversations around student mental health, institutional accountability, and the handling of harassment allegations within academic settings.

Student groups and rights organizations are now calling for a thorough and impartial investigation, as well as structural reforms to prevent such tragedies in the future.
