Ramban, Jammu & Kashmir – At least three people lost their lives and two others went missing after a cloudburst struck Ramban district on Saturday, officials confirmed. A search operation has been launched to trace the missing individuals.
The incident caused significant damage to several houses in the area. Authorities have issued an orange alert for Ramban, Jammu, Poonch, Kishtwar, and Udhampur districts as heavy rainfall continues to batter the Union Territory. The cloudburst comes amid a spell of relentless downpours that have triggered floods and landslides over the past few days, leaving at least 36 people dead and causing extensive damage to infrastructure.
Road connectivity has been severely disrupted, with the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) among the worst affected. “Several roads have been damaged due to the heavy rains. The NH-44 is currently closed but may reopen by this evening or tomorrow morning,” Deputy Commissioner Ashok Kumar Sharma told ANI.
Authorities have also ordered all schools in the Jammu division to remain closed until August 30, citing safety concerns and the severe disruption of daily life. Schools have been advised to explore the possibility of conducting online classes for students of Classes 9 to 12.
The continuous rainfall has left large parts of Jammu and Kashmir grappling with floods, landslides, and displacement, compounding the hardship of residents and putting disaster response teams on high alert.
