Sendai, Japan – Prime Minister Narendra Modi, currently on a two-day visit to Japan, arrived in Sendai city on Saturday morning. Accompanied by his Japanese counterpart, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, PM Modi travelled to the city on a bullet train. Later in the day, the two leaders are scheduled to visit a state-of-the-art semiconductor facility in Sendai, underscoring the growing technological cooperation between the two nations.
On Friday, PM Modi held summit-level talks with Prime Minister Ishiba, focusing on strengthening bilateral relations across defense, trade, technology, and business. During his visit, which began on August 29, PM Modi is expected to tour four major factories, including one that manufactures the prototype of the E10 Shinkansen bullet train—an advanced high-speed rail model India is evaluating for its own network. Several key Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) are likely to be signed during the visit. #WATCH | ‘Modi san welcome’ chants by people as PM Narendra Modi reaches Sendai, Japan. pic.twitter.com/iNAes9dR1j
The Prime Minister’s visit comes at a critical juncture, as New Delhi seeks to diversify its trade partnerships following U.S. President Donald Trump’s imposition of 50% tariffs on Indian exports. Strengthening ties with Japan is seen as part of India’s broader strategy to counterbalance trade pressures and expand access to advanced technologies.
In the second leg of his foreign tour, PM Modi will travel to Tianjin, China, to attend the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) on August 31 and September 1.
