Dublin – A 35-year-old father of three has been charged in connection with an alleged assault on a female garda in north Dublin on Thursday night, which left the officer hospitalised.
The accused, Gary Hunt of Whiteacre Crescent, Ballymun, appeared before Judge Catherine Hayden at Dublin District Court on Friday. He faces multiple charges, including assault causing harm to a garda at the Beaumont House car park, resisting arrest by Garda Allanah Murphy, failing to pay a €20 taxi fare, and smoking in the same vehicle.
Additional charges arising from incidents that continued into the early hours of Friday include criminal damage to patrol car windows, public intoxication to the point of endangering himself, and engaging in threatening, abusive, and violent behaviour at Ballymun Garda Station.
During the hearing, Garda Murphy stated that her colleague required hospital treatment following the alleged assault. She further alleged that Hunt caused damage to a patrol car and displayed “a high level of violence” at the station, attempting to attack other officers. CCTV evidence is said to support the allegations.
Defence solicitor Daniel Hanahoe noted that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has yet to issue directions and emphasised that his client retains the presumption of innocence. He added that Hunt, who is in receipt of social welfare, was willing to comply with all bail conditions.
Judge Hayden granted Hunt legal aid and released him on bail, ordering him to reappear in court in October, when DPP directions are expected.
