New Delhi – A caretaker at the Kalkaji Temple in the national capital was allegedly beaten to death following a dispute with a group of men over a sacred offering, officials confirmed on Saturday.
The incident, which occurred on Friday, was captured on CCTV cameras. The victim, identified as Yogendra Singh, 35, hailed from Fattepur in Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh, and had been serving as a Sewadaar at the temple for the past 14–15 years. Police rushed to the spot upon receiving information and launched an investigation.
According to preliminary findings, the accused men visited the temple for darshan and demanded Chunni Prasad from Singh. When he resisted, an argument ensued, escalating into a violent assault. “The accused physically attacked the victim with sticks and fist blows,” police said.
CCTV footage showed the attackers repeatedly striking Singh with sticks as bystanders passed without intervening. Singh was later rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
An FIR has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and a manhunt has been launched to trace the culprits. Locals managed to apprehend one accused, identified as Atul Pandey, 30, a resident of Dakshinpuri, and handed him over to the police.
“Efforts are underway to identify and arrest the remaining accused,” the police added.
