Zelensky Signals Willingness for Direct Talks with Putin; Trump Warns of Sanctions on Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday suggested that Turkey, Gulf nations, or European countries could serve as potential venues for direct negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, as efforts continue to find a path toward ending the ongoing conflict.

“We are preparing for contacts this week with Turkey, Gulf States, and European partners that may be willing to host talks with Russia,” Zelensky said in his nightly video address, as reported by Reuters. “On our side, everything will be prepared to the maximum in order to bring this war to an end.”

Zelensky emphasized that progress toward negotiations would depend heavily on international coordination, particularly with the United States, to maintain pressure on Moscow. He noted that these issues were discussed on Monday in Kyiv during his meeting with U.S. envoy Keith Kellogg.

“Everything now depends on the determination of global leaders—above all the United States—to apply pressure on Russia,” Zelensky stated. “So far, Russia is only signaling an intention to avoid real negotiations. This can only be changed through strong sanctions, tariffs, and real pressure.”

The Ukrainian leader’s comments came as his chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, and national security council chief held talks in Qatar with the country’s defense minister, underscoring Kyiv’s ongoing diplomatic outreach.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump warned that he is prepared to impose severe economic sanctions on Russia if Putin refuses to agree to a ceasefire. “It’s very, very serious what I have in mind, if I have to do it. But I want to see it end,” Trump told reporters on Tuesday. “We have economic sanctions—I’m talking about economic because we are not going to get into a world war.”

Trump has been urging direct, one-on-one negotiations between Zelensky and Putin. While Zelensky has expressed openness to such talks, the Kremlin has indicated that no agenda or timeline for a meeting has been established.
