Bengaluru: Preveen and his accomplice Santosh, who disguised themselves as temple priests, have been apprehended by the police for a series of thefts across prominent temples in the city and surrounding areas.
During the day, the duo performed rituals, including pujas, homams, and havans, but under the cover of night, they would steal silver, gold, and other valuables from the very temples they served, later selling the stolen items. Their elaborate ruse, including offering prayers to seek forgiveness from the deity after each theft, was ultimately exposed.
Investigations revealed that Preveen, formerly serving as a priest in well-known temples in Shivamogga and Udupi, collaborated with Santosh to target multiple temples in Bengaluru. The administration filed a complaint after temple valuables were stolen at Banashankari Temple, where Preveen had served as a priest. The duo was arrested near Gottigere while traveling on a bike.
Police confirmed that the pair had conducted thefts across several prominent Bengaluru temples, selling the stolen jewelry and other items at various shops. They meticulously planned their operations, and so far, items worth approximately ₹14 lakh have been recovered from them.
Eleven police stations, including Banashankari, Jayanagar, Kumaraswamy Layout, and JP Nagar, have registered cases against the duo, according to Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh.
