The unrest followed a call for a protest and shutdown by the LAB youth wing after two of the 15 individuals on a 35-day hunger strike since September 10 were shifted to hospital on Tuesday evening due to deteriorating health. Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has also been actively participating in the movement.
On Monday, LAB leaders had reaffirmed that they would not end their hunger strike until their demands for statehood for Ladakh and inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution were fulfilled.
Videos from the scene showed the BJP office engulfed in flames, with thick smoke rising from the premises. Several vehicles, including police vans, were torched as stone pelting broke out in parts of the city. In response, security forces deployed in large numbers used teargas and baton charges to disperse the crowd. Despite the intensity of the clashes, no injuries were reported.
In a video message posted on X, Sonam Wangchuk appealed for calm, urging young protesters to refrain from violence and maintain peace.
