New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday described the United States as a “close friend” and a “natural partner” of India, while expressing confidence that ongoing trade negotiations would soon be concluded to unlock the full potential of bilateral cooperation.
Resharing a social media post by U.S. President Donald Trump, who signalled a thaw in recent strains between Washington and New Delhi, Modi noted that both sides were committed to accelerating the talks. “India and the U.S. are close friends and natural partners. I am confident that our trade negotiations will pave the way for unlocking the limitless potential of the India–U.S. partnership. Our teams are working to conclude these discussions at the earliest,” the Prime Minister said.
Modi added that he looked forward to speaking with President Trump, stressing that both leaders would work together to ensure “a brighter, more prosperous future” for their people.
In a late-night post (India time) on Truth Social, President Trump said he was “pleased to announce” that the U.S. and India were continuing discussions to address trade barriers. Referring to Modi as a “very good friend,” Trump said he was confident there would be “no difficulty” in reaching a successful conclusion.
The remarks come amid heightened trade tensions, with Washington recently doubling tariffs on Indian goods to as high as 50 per cent, including a 25 per cent surcharge linked to New Delhi’s purchase of Russian crude oil. India has termed the U.S. measures “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable.”
Despite months of sharp rhetoric, Trump last week softened his stance, stating that India and the U.S. shared a “special relationship” and that occasional differences did not undermine the broader partnership.
India, meanwhile, has continued to defend its purchase of discounted Russian crude oil, maintaining that its energy procurement strategy is based on national interest and market dynamics. Following Western sanctions on Moscow after the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, New Delhi turned to Russian supplies to secure affordable energy for its growing economy.
