New Delhi: Delhi Police on Tuesday arrested a 29-year-old man, allegedly associated with the notorious ‘thak-thak’ gang, for stealing a Glock service pistol from a police officer’s vehicle after smashing its window, sources told PTI.
The accused, identified as Amit, a resident of Uttam Nagar, was apprehended by the Anti-Auto Theft Squad (AATS) following a tip-off. Police recovered the stolen firearm in a raid conducted in the Madangir area.
The incident took place on September 4, when a Crime Branch sub-inspector parked his car outside an eatery in Maurice Nagar. On his return, he found the window broken and a bag containing his service pistol and other valuables missing. A case was immediately registered, and multiple Crime Branch and Special Staff teams were tasked with tracing the accused.
“Based on specific intelligence inputs, the AATS carried out a raid in Madangir, leading to Amit’s arrest. He was unaware that the stolen bag contained a police weapon,” a police source said.
During interrogation, Amit admitted that he had planned to sell the firearm but was apprehended before any deal could be made, the source added.
The ‘thak-thak’ gang is infamous in Delhi for distracting motorists by tapping on car windows to snatch valuables, and in some cases, forcibly breaking into vehicles to commit thefts.
