Chicago/Kentucky:An Irish grandmother who has lived in the United States for nearly five decades is facing possible deportation following her detention by U.S. immigration authorities.
Donna Hughes-Brown, an Irish citizen and long-time U.S. resident, was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on July 29 at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport after returning from Ireland, where she had attended a family funeral.
After five days in detention in Chicago, Hughes-Brown was transferred to a facility in Campbell County, Kentucky, where she remains in custody. U.S. authorities are pursuing her removal over a 2015 misdemeanor involving a $25 cheque. Hughes-Brown had previously made restitution and completed probation in relation to the case.
Despite this, a senior Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official confirmed the government’s position: “Lawful Permanent Residents presenting at a U.S. port of entry with certain criminal convictions may be found inadmissible, placed in removal proceedings, and subject to mandatory detention.”
