Sanaa (Yemen): Israeli airstrikes struck multiple targets in Yemen’s capital Sanaa and the northern Al-Jawf province late Wednesday, killing at least 35 people and injuring more than 130, according to the Houthi-controlled Ministry of Health.
The strikes, which Israel said targeted Houthi military installations, hit densely populated civilian areas, including residential neighborhoods in Sanaa’s Al-Tahrir district, a medical facility on 60th Street in the city’s southwest, and a government compound in Al-Hazm, the capital of Al-Jawf. Local broadcaster Al Masirah TV, run by the Houthis, reported that a medical facility in Sanaa’s health sector was also damaged.
Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree claimed that Houthi air defenses fired surface-to-air missiles, forcing several Israeli jets to withdraw before completing their missions.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the operation was in retaliation for repeated Houthi drone and missile attacks targeting Israel and commercial shipping in the Red Sea. The IDF further claimed that one of the strikes hit a military site within the Yemeni presidential palace compound. Damage was also reported to a power plant and a gas station in Sanaa.
Backed by Iran, the Houthis have escalated attacks in recent months in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, launching drones and missiles at Israeli territory and international vessels in the Red Sea. On August 30, Israeli strikes in Sanaa killed the Houthi prime minister along with several ministers.
Meanwhile, Israel’s ongoing assault on Gaza claimed 30 more Palestinian lives on Tuesday, bringing the death toll since October 2023 to more than 64,000, according to local health authorities.
Separately, a boat carrying activists from the Global Flotilla, led by Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, came under drone attack for the second time off the Tunisian coast as it attempted to sail toward Gaza. Reports confirmed that all passengers on board were unharmed.
