Karur Tragedy: Police File Cases, Arrests Made for Spreading Rumours

Karur, September 30 — In the aftermath of a political rally held in Karur by Tamil Nadu Victory Party leader Vijay, 41 people tragically lost their lives amid the chaos and crowd surge. Karur police have registered a case and are conducting a detailed investigation into the incident.


Authorities have filed charges against T.V.P. General Secretary Anand, Joint General Secretary Nirmal Kumar, and Karur West District Secretary Mathiyazakan under five sections, including endangering human life and disobedience to a public official’s order. DSP Selvaraj of Karur was initially appointed as the investigating officer, with Additional SP Premanand later designated as the new officer in charge of the case.

Meanwhile, police have taken action against individuals spreading rumours and misinformation about the Karur tragedy on social media. Yesterday, three people were arrested in connection with circulating false information: Sagayam from Perumpak, Shivanesan from Mangad representing the Tamil Nadu Victory Party, and Sharath Kumar, administrator of Avadi Tavek. In total, police have registered cases against 25 individuals for allegedly spreading rumours online.

In a notable development, popular YouTuber Felix Gerald was unexpectedly taken into custody from his residence in Chennai. Preliminary reports indicate that his arrest is linked to the dissemination of misinformation regarding the Karur tragedy.

Authorities have urged the public to avoid sharing unverified information and warned that strict action will be taken against those spreading rumours that could exacerbate social unrest.
