Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah Urges Calm as Nepal Moves Toward Interim Government and Fresh Elections

Kathmandu, Thursday:Mayor Balen Shah on Thursday appealed to Nepal’s Gen Z and the wider public to remain calm as the nation prepares for an interim administration and new elections.

In a message posted on X, Shah described the unfolding moment as “unprecedented” and urged young protesters not to panic. “Please be patient. Now the country is going to get an interim government, which will hold new elections to give the nation a new mandate,” he wrote.

Expressing support for the proposal to appoint former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as head of the interim or electoral government, Shah praised Gen Z for demonstrating “understanding, wisdom, and unity” during the upheaval.

At the same time, he cautioned those eager to seize leadership roles against rushing into short-term moves. “The country needs your passion, your ideas, and your honesty permanently—not temporarily. Elections will provide the opportunity for leadership. Please don’t rush,” Shah said.

Calling on the President to safeguard what he termed “the historic revolution brought about by Gen Z,” Shah urged immediate steps to dissolve parliament and form an interim administration to ensure stability.

His remarks come at a time of heightened political flux, with major parties locked in negotiations over the shape of a caretaker government expected to guide the country toward polls.

Nepal has been convulsed by weeks of Gen Z–driven protests, initially sparked by a short-lived social media ban and fueled by long-standing anger over corruption and governance failures. The demonstrations, which escalated into violent clashes in Kathmandu and other cities, have left around 25 people dead and more than 600 injured.

Authorities, who imposed curfews and deployed the army at the height of the unrest, have since reopened Kathmandu’s international airport following a temporary shutdown. However, prohibitory orders remain in force across several urban centers as the situation continues to evolve.
