Washington, D.C., Thursday: U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday expressed deep grief and anger over the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was shot dead while addressing a gathering at Utah Valley University in Orem. Calling the incident “a dark moment for America,” the President vowed justice and accountability.
In a nationally televised address, Trump paid tribute to Kirk as “a patriot who devoted his life to the cause of open debate and the country he loved.” He emphasized Kirk’s role in inspiring millions of young Americans through his steadfast advocacy for liberty, democracy, justice, and free speech.
“Charlie inspired millions, and tonight, all who knew him and loved him are united in shock and horror,” Trump said. “He fought for liberty, democracy, justice, and the American people. He was a model for truth and freedom, deeply respected by the nation’s youth. He was also a man of profound faith, and we take comfort knowing he is now at peace with God.”
The President extended condolences to Kirk’s wife Erika, a former Miss Arizona USA, and their two young children. “Our prayers are with his beloved family, whom he cherished more than anything in the world. We ask God to watch over them in this terrible hour of grief,” he said.
Trump condemned political violence in the strongest terms, warning against continued threats to judges, law enforcement officials, and political leaders. “For years, rhetoric from the radical left has demonized good Americans like Charlie, comparing them to the world’s worst criminals. This poisonous culture of hatred has fueled terrorism and must end immediately,” he declared.
Citing past incidents of political violence—from the 2024 attempt on his own life in Pennsylvania to attacks on ICE agents and lawmakers—Trump pledged that his administration would “find each and every one of those who contributed to this atrocity, including organizations that fund and support it.”
“Charlie was the best of America, and the monster who attacked him was attacking our whole country,” Trump said. “An assassin tried to silence him with a bullet, but he failed—because together we will ensure that Charlie’s voice, message, and legacy live on for generations.”
As a mark of national mourning, Trump ordered flags to be flown at half-staff.
First Lady Melania Trump also paid tribute, writing: “Charlie’s children will be raised with stories instead of memories, photographs instead of laughter, and silence where their father’s voice should have echoed. His life should remind us that compassion, family, love, and country must always be at the center of our hearts.”
Charlie Kirk, 31, rose to prominence as the co-founder of Turning Point USA, a conservative student movement he launched at age 18. He became a leading voice in youth conservative politics and a close ally of President Trump, frequently addressing issues of race, gender, and immigration with sharp rhetoric that fueled both influence and controversy.
Kirk, an Illinois native, had recently returned from an international speaking tour before his assassination. He leaves behind his wife Erika and their two children.
Authorities are continuing their search for the suspect.
