Tamil Nadu Minister Durai Murugan Rejects ‘Special Intensive Revision,’ Draws Bihar Comparison

NEW DELHI, September 12 – Senior DMK leader and Tamil Nadu State Minister Durai Murugan on Thursday dismissed the Election Commission’s proposal for a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state, asserting that Tamil Nadu’s electorate is politically aware and cannot be compared with Bihar.

Speaking to reporters in Vellore, Murugan remarked, “Tamil Nadu is not Bihar. People here are politically conscious. The governance there is not like here; here we have the leadership of Thalapathy, and such tricks will not work in Tamil Nadu or with our leader.”

His comments came a day after the Election Commission convened a conference of Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) from all States and Union Territories to review preparations for the nationwide SIR exercise. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, presided over the meeting—the third such conference held this year.

At the conference, the Bihar CEO presented strategies, constraints, and best practices from their own revision process, sharing insights for replication in other states. CEOs across the country delivered detailed presentations on the number of electors, qualifying dates, and recent updates on digitization and uploading of electoral rolls on state portals.

The Election Commission also reviewed the mapping of current electors with data from the previous SIR, stressing the importance of accuracy and uniform guidelines. Among the key points discussed were:

  • Ensuring no polling station accommodates more than 1,200 electors.

  • Standardizing documentation requirements for inclusion in electoral rolls.

  • Reviewing the appointment and training status of DEOs, EROs, AEROs, BLOs, and BLAs.

The Commission had earlier mandated the nationwide implementation of the SIR from June 24, aiming to ensure accuracy and transparency in the electoral process. While CEOs suggested document measures to simplify inclusion of eligible citizens and curb ineligible entries, the Commission emphasized that the process should remain citizen-friendly and efficient.

The nationwide exercise is intended to ensure updated, digitized, and accurate electoral rolls ahead of upcoming elections.
