Motorcyclist Found Dead in Road Construction Pit in West Delhi; Family Alleges Negligence

A motorcyclist was found dead inside a large pit at a road construction site in West Delhi’s Janakpuri area on Friday morning, prompting allegations of negligence from his family and raising questions over safety measures at the site.

The deceased has been identified as Kamal, a resident of Kailashpuri. According to family members, he was returning home late on Thursday night after work from the Rohini area and remained in contact with relatives during his commute. When he failed to reach home, the family launched a search, visiting several police stations overnight, including those in Janakpuri, Sagarpur, Vikas Puri and Rohini.

Police informed the family around 7.30 am on Friday about an accident. Upon reaching the location, relatives found Kamal’s body inside the pit along with his motorcycle.

The family has alleged negligence on the part of the Delhi Jal Board, which was carrying out construction work at the site. They have also raised suspicions of foul play, claiming the possibility that Kamal may have been killed elsewhere and his body dumped into the pit. Police have said that all possibilities are being examined.

According to news agency PTI, authorities received a call about the incident around 7 am, following which police personnel rushed to the spot. A senior police officer said preliminary findings suggested that the pit was part of an ongoing Delhi Jal Board project and that it had been “properly barricaded.”

“We are investigating the matter to establish the exact sequence of events,” the officer was quoted as saying.

The incident has also drawn political reactions. Saurabh Bharadwaj, Delhi unit chief of the Aam Aadmi Party, shared images from the site on his official X account, describing the incident as “shocking.”

In his post, Bharadwaj alleged that an “innocent biker fell into a deep pothole, remained trapped through the night, and died,” while criticising the BJP-led administration for what he described as repeated failures to ensure road safety. He also referenced a recent fatal incident in Noida involving a waterlogged construction pit.

Authorities said forensic teams and local police are reconstructing the sequence of events, examining whether safety barricades were intact at the time of the incident, reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding area, and recording statements from witnesses and family members.

Officials emphasised that no conclusions would be drawn until the investigation is completed.
