United States President Donald Trump on Thursday alleged that he was the target of “triple sabotage” during his visit to the United Nations, citing a series of technical malfunctions, and called for an immediate investigation. He further stated that the Secret Service had already been tasked with probing the incidents.
In a lengthy post on his Truth Social platform, President Trump detailed what he described as three “very sinister events” that disrupted his appearance at the UN General Assembly.
The first occurred when the escalator carrying him and First Lady Melania Trump to the main speaking floor abruptly stopped. “It’s amazing that Melania and I didn’t fall forward onto the sharp edges of these steel steps. We were holding the handrails tightly, otherwise it could have been a disaster,” Trump wrote. He claimed the incident was deliberate, referencing a report in The Times that said UN staff had joked about switching off escalators ahead of his arrival.
“This was absolutely sabotage,” Trump asserted, adding that those responsible should be “arrested.”
The second disruption came moments later, when the teleprompter went dark as he began addressing world leaders. “As I stood before millions watching worldwide, the teleprompter didn’t work. I thought, ‘First the escalator, and now this—what kind of a place is this?’” Trump recounted. He said he continued speaking without the teleprompter for 15 minutes before it was restored, noting that his unscripted remarks ultimately received “fantastic reviews.”
Finally, Trump alleged that the sound system in the Assembly hall failed during his speech, preventing world leaders in attendance from hearing him without their earpieces. “Even Melania, sitting in the front row, said she couldn’t hear a word,” he wrote.
Labeling the incidents “not a coincidence,” Trump declared: “This was triple sabotage at the UN. They ought to be ashamed. I am sending a letter to the Secretary-General and demand an immediate investigation. All security tapes, especially of the escalator’s emergency stop button, must be preserved.”
The events unfolded on Tuesday morning (local time) as Trump and the First Lady made their way to the UN General Assembly hall. The sudden halt of the escalator forced Mrs. Trump to climb the stalled steps, with the President following closely behind. The technical issues—including the teleprompter failure and sound disruption—were captured live on international broadcasts.
During a subsequent meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Trump referenced the incidents with a lighter tone, remarking, “This was a little more exciting because of the escalator and the teleprompter. These things happen.”
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt later reinforced Trump’s concerns in a post on X, warning that “if someone at the UN intentionally stopped the escalator as the President and First Lady were stepping on, they need to be fired and investigated immediately.” She also shared a screenshot of The Times report noting staff jokes about sabotaging escalators and elevators during Trump’s visit.
